Dr. Chris Schultz is a meteorologist in NASA’s Short-Term Prediction and Research Transition (SPoRT) Center, where he works with National Weather Service forecasters and emergency managers to incorporate new lightning technologies into their Impact-based Decision Support Services. Chris has primarily focused on the transition of lightning protocols to incorporate two and three-dimensional lightning datasets for increased awareness to the threat of lightning.
Chris has also worked to improve the dissemination of the lightning threat through the construction of lightning risk analyses to the public and infrastructure, and has aided in post-mortem analyses of lightning fatalities and injuries since 2016.
In his local community, Chris is an advocate for lightning safety in the AYSO youth soccer and Dizzy Dean baseball leagues, where he has worked to educate fellow coaches and administrators on identifying threats from lightning to ensure the safety of players and staff.
Chris received a B.S. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Missouri, an M.S., and a PhD in Atmospheric Science from the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
